Hilltoppers, do you struggle to get enough sleep? 😴

The loss of even a small amount of sleep can lead to reduced alertness, impaired memory, and moodiness and can even add up to bigger health problems over time like high blood pressure and depression.

Here are 7 eating tips to help you get a better night`s rest:

1️⃣ Fuel throughout the day by having balanced meals (and snacks) every 3-5 hours (or when your body is signaling that you are hungry!).


2️⃣ You might disrupt sleep if you have too much fat or protein before bed. Fats and proteins take longer to digest, so have more reasonable portions for your late-night snacks.


3️⃣ Choose power combos for evening snacks. Choose a carb/protein combo like nut butter toast to increase uptake of tryptophan, the sleep-induced amino acid.

4️⃣ Know your caffeine "clock". Caffeine is a stimulant that takes an average of 5 hours to fully metabolize, but the range varies from 1.5 to 9-plus hours!

5️⃣ Avoid using alcohol as a sleep aid. Although alcohol might help you fall asleep faster, it also may prevent you from reaching deeper parts of the sleep cycle.

6️⃣ Spicy and acidic foods can cause heartburn, acid reflux, and increased body temperature, thus stealing sleep. Pay attention to your body`s cues and adjust accordingly.

7️⃣ Add foods that can help you sleep naturally. From almonds and walnuts to kiwis and raspberries, there are many foods that are natural sources of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate the sleep and wake cycle.

Located inside of The Ragsdale Center, South Congress Market offers breakfast and lunch, with extended lunch hours until 4:00 p.m. this semester! Breakfast features include made-to-order croissant and bagel sandwiches and rotating weekly specials, overnight oats, parfaits, fresh fruit, and a build-your-own yogurt bar.

 

At lunch, enjoy our house-made pizza station with freshly made pizza, including vegan and made without gluten-containing ingredients options, available daily! Visit our popular made-to-order taqueria station featuring corn or flour tacos, burritos, and bowls, and *NEW THIS SEMESTER* offering rotating protein specials!

 

Buddied up to the taqueria is the grill station with your classic favorites from all-beef burgers and fries to black bean burgers and roasted vegetables. Looking for a gluten-friendly option? We offer made without gluten buns upon request at the grill. At the center of the cafe, you'll find out house-made soup station and build-your-own salad bar, with a wide variety of lettuces, toppings, and house-made dressings. Sushi lover? We've got that too! Our sushi station features poke bowls, special rolls, and hot Asian-inspired bowls.

  • Stop in South Congress Market for a rotation of hot breakfast sandwiches and our self-serve yogurt bar. From 10:30am to 11:00am, we will offer express breakfast sandwiches from our Sliced station.
